Our Village
Is named in the Domesday Book of 1086, it has a rich history and heritage
As residents we need your help to move Hatfield fully into the 21st century
We want to know how Hatfield should develop in the coming years, your ideas can make a difference
HATFIELD now twinned with MERKSPLAS of Belgium
John William Harper V.C. born in Hatfield Woodhouse 6th August 1916, a close family relation to Gordon Harper (of Hatfield) worked as a peat cutter before being called up for WW2. John was killed on the 29th September 1944 and was posthumously awarded the VC which was gazetted 2nd January 1945. He served with the 4th Battallion York and Lancaster Regiment.
Merksplas the town in Belgium where John was killed have a large memorial erected near where he fell and the school children take it in turns to keep it cleaned - John has become the catalyst in the whole twinning procedure.
The twinning committee have quite an established link with the town, the Hatfield Ward, which as you know incorporated Hatfield Woodhouse, Hatfield, Dunscroft and Dunsville, is represented.
The Headmistress of Hatfield Woodhouse school acts as liasion between the schools in Merksplas and our schools and the children have a link on the website where they exchange comments etc
The Mayor of Merksplas has visited Hatfield with citizens from his own town and Hatfield Colliery Band have played in the Belgium town,
Cultural exchanges are commencing where local schools, scouts, football teams etc. are starting to visit the area, make new friends and learn from twinning
Funding is of course and as ever an issue, there will be many local fund raising events next year..
Please contact Gordon Harper on 844246 for more information.
